TAYRONA NATURE PARK

The foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta submerge into the sea in the Tayrona Park, forming a “giant hand”, with fingers round the coves of Concha, Chengue, Gairaca, Neguange, Cinto, Guachaquita and Palmarito.

Tayrona is one of those tropical paradises idealized by literature and cinema. Its white beaches below the exotic humid forests makes the Tayrona one of Colombia´s most visited Nature Parks.

As the visitor walks along the beaches, he finds himself in a complex system of rock paths, which link a network of indigenous villages to the coasts of the Sierra Nevada. Chairama (today, “Pueblito”) is one of the most important centers of craftwork as well as fishing and farming, and they pay for their public services with what they produce.

The cabins (ecohabs) in Cañaveral conserve the characteristics of the Tayrona architecture, and sleep 4-6 people. In Arrecifes, there are also camping zones with a capacity for 76 tents.

LOCATION: On the Caribbean coast 20 miles from Santa Marta, on the road to Rioacha, Department of Magdalena.

AREA: 37,000 acres, of which 12,000 are on the mainland and 3,000 are coastal waters.

ALTITUDE: Sea level to 3000ft.

TRIPS: TO Neguange, reached by the road to Palangana, which also goes to Gayraca and Playa Coralina. Through Cañaveral you can walk to the beautiful beaches of Arrecifes and El Cabo. Or go to Pueblito to see the city of Tayrona Chayrama. And to Naranjos, from Cañaveral, along natural ecological tracks, with dense vegetation all around you; or Bahia Concha.

PLACES OF INTEREST: Cañaveral (camping zones and Ecohabs), Neguange, Arrecifes, Playa Linda and La Piscina (peaceful beaches).

Los Naranjos: tracks with all kinds of vegetation and varieties of fauna. Mouth of the Piedras al Mar River. Playa del Muerto. Playa Coralina. B onito Gordo, Concha Bay, Chengue Cove, Gayraca Cove, Cinto, Guachaquita. Bathers should take precautions at beaches with strong currents.
