GALERAS SANCTUARY OF FAUNA AND FLORA
This Park is named for the Galeras Volcano, which towers over the city of Pasto and is surrounded by some astonishing natural areas.
Mist forests and páramo climb up this mighty mountain, and the visitor who does the same can see places of great beauty such as the Telpis lake, Yacuanquer, Mejia, Coba Negra and Verde lakes, the Tunal Falls (Consacá), Chorrera Negra (La Florida), hot springs at Consacá and spectacular canyons. On your way along the road round the mountain you will also come across pretty straw craftwork.
The Galeras Sanctuary of Fauna and Flora produces huge quantities of water that supply the nearby towns, and it is the habitat of a great variety of species of fauna and flora. This protected area can be visited at any time of the year: the visitor simply completes an application, which is approved by the guides and Park administration offices or the office in Pasto, which will provide the precise instructions on what to do.
The sanctuary contains the entire Galeras volcano complex, with vegetation of the high-
Andean forest, frequently clouded, the páramo , the sub-páramo the superpáramo and lands untouched by man. It also has more than 120 rivers and 4 lakes (Negra, Telpis, Mejia and Verde) and innumerable pools and beautiful waterfalls.
Galeras is home to more than 100 reported species of birds, including 16 species of humming-bird.
