LA COROTA ISLAND SANCTUARY

La Corota is the way into Lake La Concha, one of the largest lakes in the Andes.

The settlement of Encano has a pretty little pier surrounded by restaurants whose specialty is the rainbow trout. And the local inhabitants are committed to the conservation of their natural resources. In fact, the local communities support 32 rural nature reserves with forests, páramo and water sources.

A launch takes you from Encano to the Island, which is tiny paradise in misty forests, which in ancient times were a centre of worship of the Quillacinga indigenous communities and today a place where important species of flora and fauna are preserved.

La Corota is crossed by a path (300 yards long) through dense forest.

The complex symmetrical jigsaw of the treetops forms a vault for the sweet and wild motilón, the oak, myrtle, anthuria, cancho, paloerosa, sietecueros, tinto (used as a dye), orchids and ferns, to complete a beautiful picture pained by Nature herself.
